How to Eliminate or Minimize Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when muscles at the back of your neck relax. This causes the airway to narrow. As you sleep you run out of breath and this causes you to momentarily wake up from your sleep. It inhibits continuous deep sleep which is good for your health. Some people often wake up feeling tired.

There are a variety of things you can do to minimize the possibility of sleep apnea:

Quit Smoking

Smoking is responsible for a higher prevalence of snoring and sleep apnea. It increases the accumulation of fluids in the upper airway. For that reason, smokers are three times more likely to develop the condition. When you quit smoking the risk goes down significantly.

Reduce Alcohol Intake

Alcohol can turn a snoring problem into sleep apnea. When you drink it relaxes the muscles at the back of your neck that keep the airway open. Alcohol aggravates the problem further by reducing the response time when you stop breathing and when you wake up from your sleep. This leaves most people feeling tired in the morning. The more you drink the worse the problem is likely to be. You should either stop drinking or reduce the amounts you take.

Cut Weight, Keep Fit

People with excess weight have a lot more tissue on the muscles to the back of the neck that keeps the airway open. The excess tissue will cause the muscles to collapse into the airway even if there is a slight relaxation of the muscles.

Losing weight is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of sleep apnea. It is much more cost effective than going for surgery or any other kind of medical intervention. However, there are other factors that may cause sleep apnea. If these tips fail to solve the problem, seek the advice of a specialist.
